Conducting a DIF Analysis

  1. The Difficulty, Importance and Frequency (DIF) Analysis is a crucial element of a Training Needs Analysis. It is a method of analysing Role information through the Difficulty, Importance and Frequency of tasks and sub-tasks, with the aim of enabling early training decisions, such as the generation of Initial Training Categories (TCats). The TCats identify the training priorities and how the training should be delivered in order to meet the performance statements.
  2. Shadow uses a DIF Analysis 1 - 5, as per the table below. When completing the DIF Analysis you should consider the following:
    1. Difficulty: How complex is the task? What level of experience does the user require to conduct the task? How long does it take to become competent in the task?
    2. Importance: How important is the task to operations? Does the task contribute to user performance? Is the task required to ensure that users maintain compliance with legislation?
    3. Frequency: How often is the task performed in the normal course of work? Is the task only performed in certain scenarios or under certain conditions? How often does the task change due to conditions or industry trends?

  1. Once you have completed the DIF Analysis, reviewed the content and made relevant comments, you are ready to send the Role back to the Analyst so that they can review the DIF and incorporate relevant comments. You can inform the Analyst that the DIF has been completed via the comments function.

  2. To complete a DIF Analysis, follow the step-by-step guide provided below.
